Before buying just any fish oil, even ones with respected brand names at leading retailers, it is important to understand that the fish oil products in the consumer market are not created equal and vary widely. Of primary importance is choosing a fish oil that is in a Triglyceride format, not an Esther format, which is the predominant format. Esther fish oil is less costly to produce as it hasn’t been taken through additional processing steps like the Nordic Naturals products. As far as I know, Nordic Naturals is a world leader amongst a very elite group of producers that go the extra step to produce Triglyceride fish oil, which is up to 300% more absorbable by the body than Esther. Thus it may cost a bit more, but the additional benefits are worth it.
The medical knowledge and wellness attributes of fish oil are significant, medically recognized and growing, and are far too voluminous to write about here. However, the primary reason to supplement with fish oil is to correct the Omega 6 - Omega 3 (fatty acid) imbalance caused by the typical western diet; this imbalance is a leading cause of Cardiovascular Disease, such as arteriolosclerosis. A business friend, Dr. Artemis Simopoulos, M.D., is a world authority on essential fatty acids and was nutritional adviser to the Office of Consumer Affairs at the White House. She is the editor in chief of World Review of Nutrition and Dietetics and the author of The Healing Diet, Mediterranean Diets, and More on Mediterranean Diets which received worldwide attention and has led to a number of international conferences on this subject. For those of you more scientifically minded, by clicking here you can access Dr. Simopoulos’ review, “The Importance of the Omega-6/Omega-3 Fatty Acid Ratio in Cardiovascular Disease and Other Chronic Diseases.”
Lastly, pregnant woman and young children should seriously consider fish oil supplements because of the benefits for pre-natal and post-natal development. Talk to your OBGYN or pediatrician about the importance of fish oil and choose Nordic Naturals.
